Information

The 4300K D3S Xenon lamps (the standard color temperature fitted by almost all manufacturers at the factory) do not suddenly "burn out" like the old halogens, but undergo a gradual exhaustion process.

Here's a quick guide on when and why to intervene.

When to change them: the warning signs

On average, a quality Xenon lamp lasts between 2,000 and 3,000 hours of use. Here are the symptoms that indicate the end of its life cycle:

  • Color change (Varighiera): This is the most obvious sign. If the light changes from warm white (4300K) to a purple, pink, or bluish hue, the lamp is almost exhausted.

  • Loss of brightness: If your headlights feel like they are "not shining" anymore or the beam has become dimmer than it used to, the gas inside is losing efficiency.

  • Flickering: If the light flickers or the lamp turns off and on by itself, the internal electrode is no longer able to maintain a stable arc.

  • Failure to ignite: When the lamp requires several attempts to light (a sign that the ballast is having difficulty igniting the gas).

Why do they need to be changed?

1. Road safety

Xenon headlights lose up to 30-50% of their light output before finally shutting down. Driving with dead bulbs drastically reduces nighttime visibility and beam depth, increasing reaction times to obstacles.

2. Ballast damage prevention

An old bulb requires an increasingly higher starting voltage to turn on. This puts unnecessary stress on the control unit (ballast) , which is a much more expensive component than the bulb itself. Replacing the bulb in time protects the car's electronics.

3. Decomposition of chemical salts

Inside the bulb are metal halide salts and xenon gas. Over time and with heat, these salts deposit on the glass walls, making it opaque and altering the color spectrum (which is why they turn purple).

Expert advice

Replacing in pairs: It is essential to always change both lamps at the same time .

If you replaced just one, you'd have two headlights with different intensity and color: the new one would be white and bright, the old one yellowish/purple and dim. Furthermore, if one reaches the end of its life, the other will soon follow.

Note on the 4300K temperature

4300K is considered the standard because it offers the highest light output (lumen) . If you go to higher shades (e.g. 6000K), you will get a bluer, more "modern" light, but you will lose visibility in rain or fog.
