What is the AFS system and how does it work?

While traditional headlights always illuminate straight ahead of the car, the AFS system is "intelligent". Thanks to a series of sensors that read the steering angle, vehicle speed and yaw, the onboard computer dynamically directs the Xenon headlight beam in the direction you are actually going.

In a bend, the headlights rotate towards the inside of the curve, illuminating the so-called "blind spots" that would normally remain dark.

The biggest advantage is the elimination of the "dark beyond the bend". By lighting the trajectory in advance, AFS allows you to:

• Notice obstacles, pedestrians or cyclists at the roadside in good time.

• See the shape of the bend before entering it, reducing the risk of leaving the road.

2. The power and depth of Xenon

Pairing AFS with Xenon technology (also called HID) means having an incredibly efficient light:

• Superior brightness: Xenon provides up to 300% more light compared with halogen bulbs.

• Daylight-like colour: The white/blue light is far less tiring to the eyes on long night journeys.

• Wider beam: It covers not only depth but also the sides of the carriageway better.

3. Automatic beam height adjustment (Autolevelling)

Original Xenon headlights with AFS almost always include automatic levelling. If you load the boot heavily or the car hits a bump, the headlights instantly adjust downwards so as not to dazzle other drivers travelling in the opposite direction, while still maintaining maximum visibility for you.

4. Speed adaptation (in more advanced systems)

Many AFS systems do more than just turn left and right; they modify the beam according to the context:

• In town (low speeds): The beam widens to better illuminate pavements and junctions.

• On the motorway (high speeds): The beam narrows and rises slightly to give you more visual depth.
