Information

Replacing H4 halogen bulbs with a Xenon (HID) kit is commonly considered by those seeking a significant aesthetic upgrade for their car or motorcycle. However, the specific choice of a 12,000K (Kelvin) color temperature presents significant practical and legal challenges.

1. The Aesthetic Impact (The Main Reason)

Standard H4 halogen bulbs emit a warm, yellowish light (around 3200K). Switching to 12000K xenon completely transforms the vehicle's look:

  • The color: At 12000K the light is not white, nor is it simply blue; it is a deep blue shade with strong purple reflections .

  • The visual effect: It gives the vehicle an extremely customized and "futuristic" look, highly sought after in the tuning or exhibition world.

2. Technical and Visibility Disadvantages (The Compromise)

While aesthetics gains points, safety and visibility lose many . There's an important rule of optical physics: the higher the Kelvin, the less efficient the light is for the human eye.

  • Least Lumens (Effective Brightness): Xenon at 4300K-5000K (pure white similar to sunlight) emits the maximum possible lumens (around 3200 lumens). Going up to 12000K, the amount of actual light on the road drops dramatically , often being lower than even a good halogen lamp.

  • Poor visibility in rain and fog: Blue/violet light has a wavelength that tends to reflect off water droplets rather than pass through them. On wet asphalt or in fog, the "white wall" effect (in this case, a blue wall) is guaranteed, and the road will appear to "swallow" the light, leaving you in the dark.

  • Eye strain: The human eye has a much harder time focusing on details under deep violet/blue light than under white or warm light.

3. The problem of the light beam (H4 vs Xenon parabolic)

H4 lamps are double-filament lamps (they manage both low beam and high beam in the same bulb).

  • The headlight reflectors created for H4 halogen bulbs are designed to reflect the light emitted by a precise millimetre-thick filament.

  • H4 xenon bulbs (often Bi-Xenon , which move magnetically to change focus) create an electric arc in the gas. This completely changes the geometry of the light.

  • Result: Without a proper lens, the headlight will project light in a diffuse and uncontrolled manner, violently dazzling anyone who crosses your path.
