What is it for?

This module manages the vehicle's height and ride height based on load. It receives data from the level sensors located on the suspension control arms and directly controls the compressor unit and pneumatic valves.

Its main purpose is:

• Keep your car level both when empty and when fully loaded (e.g. with heavy luggage or a trailer).

• Ensure driving stability and correct headlight alignment, preventing the rear end from lowering too dangerously.

Why should you change it?

As an older electronic component, often located in areas subject to humidity or temperature fluctuations, the control unit can fail. The main reasons why replacement is necessary include:

• Failure to activate the compressor: The car remains "completely flat" at the rear because the control unit does not send the inflation signal to the cushions.

• Errors on the instrument panel: Appearance of the warning light dedicated to the self-levelling suspension ( "Level adjustment inactive" or specific error codes in OBD diagnosis related to the lack of communication with the module).

• Water ingress or oxidation: Very common on the E39 and E53, where moisture in the trunk or under the carpet can short-circuit the internal circuit board.

• Asymmetric or abnormal behavior: The car positions itself at incorrect or irregular heights even though the sensors and air cushions are perfectly intact.

If you experience any of these problems, replacing it with a working module (often also searched for used or remanufactured depending on the year of the vehicles) will resolve the pneumatic system blockage.
