• Engine Protection: A faulty pump can cause a mixture that is too "lean" (too little fuel, too much air), leading to localized overheating and potential piston damage.
• Avoid a total blockage: If the pump stops turning, the car will suddenly stall and never start again, leaving you stranded at the most inopportune moment.
• Debris Contamination: If the pump is "flaking" internally, it can release tiny metal fragments into the system, clogging the injectors and making the repair much more expensive.

When should you do it? (The warning signs)

There is no fixed mileage (like with oil), but you should consider changing it if you experience any of these symptoms:

• Difficulty starting: The engine idles for several seconds before starting, because the pump is struggling to build up pressure in the system.
