Information

The H4 relay (or wiring with relay for H4 lamps) is a fundamental electrical component when modifying the headlights of a car, especially when switching from classic halogen bulbs to a Xenon (HID) kit or to more powerful halogen bulbs.

Its main function is to isolate the car's original electrical system from the high-intensity current required by the headlights, drawing energy directly from the battery.

Here is the detailed description of what it is for and why it is highly recommended (if not essential) on Xenon kits.

What is an H4 Relay used for?

In cars with standard H4 bulbs, the current passes through the headlight switch on the dashboard (the headlight switch) and relatively thin wires before reaching the bulb.

The relay acts as a controlled switch :

  1. Use the car's original cable only as an electrical "signal" (a very weak current).

  2. When you turn on the headlights, the relay closes and passes the power current directly from the battery to the headlights , using much larger cross-section wires and a dedicated fuse.

Why is it better to install it on Xenon Kits?

H4 bulbs are "bi-xenon," meaning a single bulb provides both low and high beam (by magnetically shifting the bulb). Installing the relay offers three huge advantages:

1. Peak ignition management (Scent)

Xenon ballasts are very efficient once hot, but in the first 2-3 seconds of ignition they require a lot of current (a peak that can exceed 15-20 Amps) to ionize the gas inside the lamp.

  • Without Relay: This surge puts strain on the car's original wiring. It can blow the stock fuses, overheat the headlight switch, or cause the headlights to flicker.

  • With Relay: The current comes directly from the battery without touching the car's delicate system.

2. Eliminate flickering and random shutdowns

Many modern cars control the headlights via the main control module (BCM) or use pulse-width modulation (PWM) systems. If the control unit detects abnormal current draw or if the wiring is too thin, the voltage drops and the xenon headlights begin to flicker or turn off automatically. The relay stabilizes the voltage at a steady 12V.

3. Protection of the car's electrical system

Chinese or aftermarket xenon kits can have backfires or short circuits. If something goes wrong:

  • Without Relay: You risk burning out the car's control unit or the headlight switch (repairs costing hundreds of euros).

  • With Relay: Simply blow the fuse built into the relay wiring, saving your car.

4. Management of the low beam / high beam switch

H4 Xenon bulbs change function by moving a small magnet inside the bulb. The H4 relay wiring harness includes a control unit that perfectly coordinates this electromechanical movement when you pull the high beam lever, something the stock system often fails to do properly on its own.
